Suffolk Virginia Deputy Commonwealth Attorney

In 2000, Marie became a prosecutor in Suffolk. Within weeks of starting at
the Suffolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, Marie quickly transitioned
into prosecuting sexual assault cases and also child abuse and neglect
cases. It was a perfect fit for Marie who enjoyed working with children to
give voices to those that are often under-represented in the criminal law
system.
Marie started at the Suffolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office as an
Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney before being promoted to Senior
Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney, and then to the Deputy
Commonwealth’s Attorney for the Juvenile Crimes Team. The Juvenile
Crimes Team was composed of four (4) attorneys, two (2) legal assistants,
and victim/witness personnel. The Juvenile Crimes Team was responsible
for the prosecution of all crimes involving a juvenile defendant, juvenile
victim, or a crime where the defendant and victim are family members. Her
prosecuting responsibilities included prosecuting sexual assault crimes,
child abuse crimes, and homicides involving children. In addition, her daily
activities included supervision of team members, interviewing victims and
witnesses, reviewing investigative files for charging and investigative
decisions, preparing case and investigative files for trial, prosecuting crimes
through bench and jury trials, and writing appellate briefs. Marie was also
responsible for selecting and supervising all legal interns and law students.
